What is Cleocin Vaginal (clindamycin vaginal)?

Clindamycin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria in the body.

Clindamycin vaginal is used to treat vaginal infections caused by bacteria.

Clindamycin vaginal may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What is the most important information I should know about Cleocin Vaginal (clindamycin vaginal)?

Before using clindamycin vaginal, tell your doctor if you have ever had severe diarrhea caused by using an antibiotic.

Antibiotic medicines can cause diarrhea, which may be a sign of a new infection. If you have diarrhea that is watery or has blood in it, call your doctor. Do not use any medicine to stop the diarrhea unless your doctor has told you to.

If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are using clindamycin vaginal. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time.

What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before using Cleocin Vaginal (clindamycin vaginal)?

• colitis, Crohn's disease, or other intestinal disorder; or

• if you have ever had severe diarrhea caused by using an antibiotic.

Before using clindamycin vaginal, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have any type of intestinal disorder. You may not be able to use clindamycin vaginal, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment.

Clindamycin vaginal cream may contain mineral oil, which can weaken the latex rubber in a condom. This could result in breaking of the condom, and an unintended pregnancy could result. Avoid using a condom as a birth control method while you are using clindamycin vaginal and for at least 72 hours (3 days) after your treatment ends.

How should I use Cleocin Vaginal (clindamycin vaginal)?

Use this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not use the medication in larger amounts, or use it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Follow the directions on your prescription label.

This medication comes with patient instructions for safe and effective use. Follow these directions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

Apply the vaginal cream only with the disposable applicators provided with the medicine. Use a new applicator each time you apply the cream, and then throw the applicator away. Do not clean or reuse a disposable applicator.

Clindamycin vaginal is usually used at bedtime for 3 to 7 nights in a row.

What happens if I miss a dose?

Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and use the medicine at your next regularly scheduled time. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose. It is best to use the medication only at bedtime, or while you will be resting or lying down.

What happens if I overdose?

Symptoms of a clindamycin vaginal overdose may include diarrhea that is watery or bloody.

What should I avoid while using Cleocin Vaginal (clindamycin vaginal)?

• changes in your menstrual periods; or

• mild skin rash or itching.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

There may be other drugs that can affect clindamycin vaginal. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use.
