Cimetidine Suspension
Generic Name: Cimetidine Oral Suspension (sye-MEHT-ih-deen)
Brand Name: Tagamet
Cimetidine Suspension is used for:Treating and preventing heartburn. Cimetidine Suspension may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Cimetidine Suspension is a histamine blocker. It works by blocking one of the chemical transmitters, which is responsible for stimulating the production of stomach acid.
Do NOT use Cimetidine Suspension if:
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Cimetidine Suspension
- you are taking a nitrosourea (eg, streptozocin), dofetilide, or cisapride
Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.
Before using Cimetidine Suspension:Some medical conditions may interact with Cimetidine Suspension. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the
following apply to you:
- if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
- if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
- if you have liver or kidney problems
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Cimetidine Suspension. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:
- Cisapride because the effectiveness of Cimetidine Suspension may be decreased
- Anticoagulants (eg, warfarin), beta-adrenergic blockers (metoprolol), bupivacaine, carbamazepine, cisapride, citalopram, clozapine, cyclosporine, diltiazem, disopyramide, dofetildine, epirubicin, erythromycin,
ethanol, flecainide, fluorouracil, hydantoins (eg, phenytoin), labetalol, lidocaine, metformin/phenformin, nifedipine, narcotic analgesics (morphine), nitrosoureas (eg, streptozocin), paroxetine, procainamide, quinazolines (tamsulosin), quinidine, sildenafil, succinylcholine, sulfonylureas (eg, glyburide), certain stimulants (eg, albuterol, amphetamine, pseudoephedrine), tacrine, theophyllines, tricyclic antidepressants
(eg, amitriptyline), or zaleplon because the actions and side effects of these medicines may be increased
- Clarithromycin, tetracyclines (eg, doxycycline), or tocainide because the effectiveness of these medicines may be decreased
This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Cimetidine Suspension may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of
any medicine.
How to use Cimetidine Suspension:Use Cimetidine Suspension as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Cimetidine Suspension may be taken with or without food.
- Shake well before taking a dose of Cimetidine Suspension.
- Take Cimetidine Suspension with a full glass of water.
- Use a measuring device marked for medicine dosing. Ask your pharmacist for help if you are unsure of how to measure this dose.
- Cimetidine Suspension should not be taken within 2 hours of antacids, cephalosporins
(eg, cephalexin), itraconazole, or ketoconazole.
- If you miss a dose of Cimetidine Suspension, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Important safety information:
- Cimetidine Suspension
may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to Cimetidine Suspension. Using Cimetidine Suspension alone, with certain other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks.
- Do not use this product if you have difficulty swallowing.
- If your symptoms do not improve within a few weeks or if they become worse, check with your doctor.
- LAB TESTS, including liver function, kidney function, and complete blood cell counts, may be performed to check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
- Use Cimetidine Suspension with caution in the ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to its effects.
- Use Cimetidine Suspension with extreme caution in CHILDREN; safety and effectiveness have not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant,
discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Cimetidine Suspension during pregnancy. Cimetidine Suspension is excreted in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Cimetidine Suspension.
Possible side effects of Cimetidine Suspension:All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome: Diarrhea; breast growth; dizziness;
drowsiness; hallucinations; headache; mental confusion; sexual difficulties. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); black, tarry stools; vomit that looks like coffee grounds.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center (http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm), or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing;
fast heartbeat; restlessness; tremors; vomiting.
Proper storage of Cimetidine Suspension:Store Cimetidine Suspension at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F
(20 and 25 degrees C). Store away from heat, light, and moisture. Keep Cimetidine Suspension out of the reach of children and away from pets.
