Generic Name: Cimetidine Injection Solution (sye-MET-i-deen)
Brand Name: Generics only. No brands available.

Cimetidine Solution is used for:

Treating and preventing ulcers of the stomach and small intestine, and relieving symptoms associated with conditions that cause increased acid secretion (eg, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome) in patients who cannot take or do not respond to oral medicine. It is also used for preventing stomach bleeding in critically ill patients. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Cimetidine Solution is an H2 (histamine) blocker. It works by blocking one of the chemicals, histamine, that stimulates the release of acid into the stomach. This reduces acidity in the stomach.

Do NOT use Cimetidine Solution if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Cimetidine Solution
  • you are taking cisapride, dofetilide, or a nitrosoureas (eg, carmustine)

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Cimetidine Solution:

Some medical conditions may interact with Cimetidine Solution. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have liver or kidney problems

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Cimetidine Solution. Tell your health care provider if you are taking any other medicines, especially any of the following:

  • Many prescription medicines (eg, those used for angina, asthma, arrhythmias, blood thinning, cancer, erectile dysfunction, high blood pressure, infections, pain, psychiatric disorders, seizures, other conditions) because their actions and side effects, some potentially life-threatening, may be increased by Cimetidine Solution.

This may not be a complete list of all interactions that may occur. Ask your health care provider if Cimetidine Solution may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Cimetidine Solution:

Use Cimetidine Solution as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Cimetidine Solution is usually administered as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you are using Cimetidine Solution at home, carefully follow the injection procedures taught to you by your health care provider.
  • If Cimetidine Solution contains particles or is discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged in any way, do not use it.
  • If you are taking a cephalosporin (eg, cephalexin), itraconazole, or ketoconazole, you should take them at least 2 hours before Cimetidine Solution.
  • Keep this product, as well as all syringes and needles, out of the reach of children. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Dispose of properly after use. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist to explain local regulations for proper disposal.
  • If you miss a dose of Cimetidine Solution, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Cimetidine Solution.
