Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream is used for:

Treating and preventing infection due to minor cuts, scrapes, and burns.

Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream is an antibiotic combination. It works by killing sensitive bacteria on the skin or in wounds.

Do NOT use Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream if:

  • you are allergic to any ingredient in Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream

Contact your doctor or health care provider right away if any of these apply to you.

Before using Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream:

Some medical conditions may interact with Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:

  • if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
  • if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
  • if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
  • if you have deep wounds, puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns

Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream. Because little, if any, of Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream is absorbed into the blood, the risk of it interacting with another medicine is low.

Ask your health care provider if Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.

How to use Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream:

Use Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

  • Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream is for external use only. Do not use in or near the eyes, nose, or mouth. If you get Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream in your eyes, rinse immediately with cool tap water.
  • Do not apply Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream over large areas of your body without first checking with your doctor.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before and after using Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream, unless your hands are part of the treated area.
  • Wash and completely dry the affected area. Apply a small amount of Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream (about the size of the tip of the finger) to the affected area. Gently rub the medicine in until it is evenly distributed.
  • The treated area may be covered with bandages.
  • If you miss a dose of Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream and you are using it regularly, use it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.

Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream.

Important safety information:

  • If your symptoms do not get better within 1 week, if they clear up and then reappear, or if they get worse, check with your doctor.
  • Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than 1 week without checking with your doctor.
  • If your doctor recommended that you use Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream for a certain period of time, it is important to use Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream for the full course of treatment, even if your symptoms improve within a few days.
  • Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream may cause harm if it is swallowed. If you may have taken it by mouth, contact your poison control center or emergency room right away.
  • Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream should not be used in CHILDREN younger than 2 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children have not been confirmed.
  • PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream while you are pregnant. It is not known if Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream is found in breast milk. If you are or will be breast-feeding while you use this medicine, check with your doctor. Discuss any possible risks to your baby.

Possible side effects of Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream:

All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. When used in small doses, no COMMON side effects have been reported with this product. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); skin irritation, pain, burning, cracking, redness, or peeling not present before using Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream; worsening or recurrence of wound symptoms.

Proper storage of Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream:

Store Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream at room temperature, between 68 and 77 degrees F (20 and 25 degrees C), in a tightly closed container. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Neomycin/Polymyxin Cream out of the reach of children and away from pets.
